On Wednesday night, Gary, Kevin and I went along to a local bar to play in the New Jersey Free Poker league. Essentially, you play for free and win points depending on where you place in the tournament(s) held that night. At the end of a 6 month season, the top 200 points getters compete in a winner-takes-all tournament to win an entry to the WSOP Main Event. So, clearly the chances of winning anything out of this are pretty much zero but we thought we would check it out in any case.
The play, as you would expect in a free tournament, was wild and crazy. In many respects, you simply need to catch cards at the right time to win as bluffs get called down and raises really don't normally force people off hands. I busted out in the middle of both tournaments, both times I had my opponent dominated and got sucked out on. Gary actually won the first tournament and Kevin was still playing in the 2nd one when we left, so perhaps he did OK there. Overall, it was a fun night. Not sure I will be a regular but certainly it is something different to do from time to time.

Hey, I play sometimes at the njfreepoker and what I get out of it the ability to hone my skills. Acually it a 4 month season, to win an entry to the WSOP Main Event with 2-5 place winning satellite seats and they do monthly satelite seat tournaments.
So chances of winning anything out of this are pretty much zero is not correct, playing against 200 player in the main event and 40-50 for the monthly events your odds are good. Hey it's easier than hitting the lottery.
There are also other free poker leagues in NJ which I attend sometime cause they're close to home, but what they lack are dealers which the nj free poker leagues has. I rather sit back and relax instead of dealing. But you can still benefit from playing there also.
What suprised me was that they had quite a few good female players attending the tourneys and a couple of times I got kick out of the tourney for saying SH!T or F*@K to frequently. Hey your at a nightclub, your drinking and I should be able to say SH!T, your not at church.
I have met quite of few good players there that are regular poker players in A.C. Made new friends and get the opportunity to discuss hand plays and stradegy.
A couple of negative is if you quailfy for thier big finals, they tend to post the date 3 weeks before which does'nt give me enough time to make arrangements at my job to take a saturday and sunday off. They have a dealer that is a little slower than others, which I can't wait till they merge tables and change dealer. If you get knock out early out out of the 7PM game, thier 2nd game doesn't start till 8:30 or so, I usally don't stay for thier 2nd or 3rd game cause I don't wanna wait an hour or longer. Even though it's free there are some players that take way to serious, you would think they were playing for a million bucks.
But hey, what do expect it's free poker and something different in the way of entertainment.
