New Fridge

Our frdge pretty much has been falling apart for quite a while. I was able to slow down the decline with some WD-40 but once the shelves started falling off, we were faced with the prospect of getting a new one. We visited our local Sears and were met by Steve, a quite helpful sales man. Of course, Fiona then proceeded to ask Steve about the various models, trying to be involved...which was quite strange as she was the one who did NOT want a new fridge.

Our options were actually quite limited due to the space we had for it, but we eventually settled on a "top freezer" model with a built in water dispenser in the door. It was the same width as our current model however was about 6" taller and probably 2" deeper.

It was delivered on Monday, much to Mindy's delight. We can now fit a lot more stuff in, it uses the space inside much more efficiently and combined with the slight increase in size, you can notice the improvement. I guess that an extra couple of inches really makes a difference!

This was the one bright spot for the weekend. The cricket has been disgusting - I think we have the players to do better, we are just not performing well enough...frustrating.

Sick Of The Cold

I am now getting quite sick of the freezing weather we are having right now. It has been over a week since the temperature has been above freezing and enough is enough! Still, I have managed to make he best of this over the past few days.

The weekend was spent with the kids. Mindy was in Virginia visiting her family. I had planned to get some stuff done around the house until I saw there was a marathon of the show "Critical Situation" on TV. Basically, each episode took you through a situation, sometimes a natural disaster; an accident; a hostage situation; a wartime incident and showed how the problem developed and took you through the resolution. It really was quite interesting and so this filled in my time in between playing board games with the kids; changing Barbie clothes; getting them fed, bathed etc, etc...

Mindy arrived back on Sunday night. So Monday was spent celebrating Martin Luther King Day by going to lunch with friends and sledding in the back yard. We also built a snowman, or as I was told by my wife and two daughters - a "snow girl"!

Work is OK this week - loving the short week and looking forward to another weekend!

Winter Blues

Winter is certainly here now! We do not get back above freezing for about another week. Not sure that there is any/much snow/ice forecast...but the cold weather will be miserable enough. Last weekend we took the chance to use the snow fall and go sledding in our yard. Due to the landscaping we had done a couple of years ago there is quite a nice slope that actually worked really well as a sledding slope. Depending on the sled selected, you could actually get up some speed and you needed to be careful not to hit the fence too hard. Gary and I acted as "goal keepers" of sorts, catching kids before they did any damage. Best performed sled was the cheap, plastic saucer...even more fun if spun around.

The calorie counting is going well. It is actually getting a little easier to get through the day without headaches, feeling dizzy and being generally miserable. There have been a couple of fun days interrupting my progress however these help to make the salads a little more tolerable. Hope to see some results soon.

Enjoyed the T20 cricket. I certainly agree with the hype that this will be the dominant form of the game for the masses. Hopefully tests do not go away but they will need to find a way to live side-by-side with T20 otherwise they will get swept away I feel.

Ready for the weekend with the kids. Mindy is going to Virginia tomorrow to see her family and so it will be just me and the kids for a few days. Not sure what we will do...but I am sure we wil have fun.

Latest Events

For the past few days I have spent a lot of time starving and watching cricket. Mindy and I both resolved to try to lose some weight early this year. Hopefully we can lose a little, get to where we want to be and then maintain it with some sensible eating over time.

Calorie restriction is pretty much the only way to lose weight. Exercising more might assist, but unless you reduce what you eat, I don't think you will ever get there. If you have any doubts, check out how many calories are in a can of coke / chocolate bar etc...then go to a gym and jog on a treadmill until you have burnt the same number of calories. It is a lot easier to skip the junk! The only saving grace out of all of this is that I can eat more than Mindy as being male and bigger I will naturally burn more calories than her every day! Not sure that she is quite so happy with this fact as I am.

My target is about 1500 calories per day. When combined with some additional exercise, I think this should see me lose about 2 lbs per week. There will be a weekend at the end of the month where we know things will get off track a bit - Mindy's birthday is Jan 30 and I am leaving for a work "conference" after that for two days where there will be an open bar and plenty of bad food to eat - however, hopefully we can stick with it. So far, so good but to be fair, it has really only been a few days!

The cricket is certainly much better in 2009! This last game was a very important win for us, hopefully giving us some form and confidence to take into our tour of South Africa. Still not convinced about McDonald's batting but he looked OK with the ball. Bollinger impressed as did Johnson and Siddle, so our bowling is not too bad I think. One thing is for sure...we will have to work for our wins much more so than in the past.

It is tough to get back into work after my time off but things are going well. Colgate is a great place to be in general, and especially right now, so hopefully I can make it last for a while yet.

2539

2539 was the final total of miles logged during our trip. We finally arrived home after our two day slog from Florida. I pretty much spent the last 3 days in Florida sleeping in, napping on the couch or napping outside on the deck. I think Mindy was getting a little embarrassed by it all in the end but I was determined to prove that I could relax and feel at home with her family. We really did intend for these days to be a chance to unwind and relax after Disney and aside from a bit of fishing (both of the girls caught fish with their new rods), we really did not do a whole lot.

New Year's Eve was spent quietly at the house. The party animal side of Mindy came out with her having two "Mike's Hard Lemonade's" and 1/2 a glass of Baily's...before falling asleep on the couch by 10:00pm. To be fair, she did not have the benefit of the 3 days of napping in Jacksonville mentioned above. We also watched "Tropic Thunder", a movie which had a good idea but we both thought could have been done a LOT better...perhaps making it funny would have been a good start.

Basically the rest of the week is set for relaxing and getting ready for work next week. In addition, we are both working our resolutions to eat better, exercise more and drop a bit of weight. The first step is keeping a food diary and tracking exactly how much we are consuming. Kind of shocking when you start to really look at this...
