Other than his time, Phil also donated his copy of Guitar Hero to the Quirk cause. He no longer needed it so wanted to find it a good home. Based on early results, it will be a much loved part of the family!
The girls were doing OK with it, pretty much using it on the easiest level and having a good time. Fiona struggles with the guitar but does OK on the drums. Naomi was doing quite well on both. Mindy and I also had a few goes and then bumped up the difficulty to the second easiest level…man, quite a jump for us! I think we will be at that level for quite a while, perhaps forever! Both of us were doing OK and in a rhythm, then, just to mess you up, they would send down a “Blue” note to hit and even though you know it is coming, for some reason it would mess me up. The girls tried to made us promise to not play it when they were in bed. We of course promised no such thing but we did wait until they were asleep so that they could not hear the action.
Just to let us know what we can aspire to, I searched on youtube and found some clips of people doing INSANE things with the game. Things like playing “Beat It” on expert mode and scoring 100% - ridiculous! Then I thought about it a little more and I am not sure if I WANT to get that good at Guitar Hero…kind of would be a waste of my life if that was what I managed to achieve I guess. Still, will be playing it on our easy levels quite a bit and who knows, maybe one day we will improve.

Operation "Get It Together"
Since the birth of Angus, things have been a bit of a struggle around here. Not in a major way...but my work schedule, combined with the month in Australia, then some travel with work had left us in need of some help to get the ball rolling. Phil offered up his services to get our drive straight and after an hour of raking, trimming back weeds and leaf blowing, we had made a great improvement.
Inside the house we are also making some changes. Getting rid of stuff that Angus is growing out of and the feeling is amazingly liberating. We are going to stay on top of this as both of us know we need to get this straight.
In parallel, I am combining this with Operation "Rip Every CD I Own". I am steadliy working through the list. Currently am at "J". Not sure why but it feels like an accomplishment!
Interesting developments in rugby. Quade Cooper mulling over an offer from the Eels. I certainly have mixed feelings about this...I think he would be great for Parramatta but this would likely crush any chance the Wallabies had of winning the World Cup. Still, I guess I have to be positive and see the good in whatever decision he makes. Now, if he were mulling an offer from the Broncos, I would be quite angry at the prospect.
Finally, the weather seems to be cooling a little. We have been crushed by the heatwave since we got back - nice to finally get some more mild weather. Hopefully we are past the worst of it all.

August 7 - 11 Years
August 7 marked our wedding anniversary! I am dubbing this our "Spinal Tap" anniversary for reasons that will be obvious to anyone who has seen the movie. For anyone who has NOT seen the movie, you are really missing out and this should be addressed!
As for the day, we went to lunch at TGI Fridays (not really a romantic destination) with the girls and spent the rest of the day with the girls at the house. Thrilling day, right? Well...with 3 kids, especially a 7 month old one, it is kind of tough to do much else!

Australia - Week 4
So on to our final week back home. Saturday was taken up with a joint birthday celebration for Linda and Andrew at their house in Paterson. We drove up in the late afternoon - quite a nice drive and VERY rural by the time we arrived. The girls would have loved the farms and cows etc that were all over the place except they were too busy watching Shrek for about the 80th time on their iPods! We had dinner at the local pub and ended up back at their house playing poker for a very high stakes tournament ($5 buy in). In the end it came down to Mindy and Alex...and Alex's skills won out in the end.
Sunday was kicked off by bacon and eggs on the BBQ then 9 holes of golf at Paterson golf club. The previous night I had asked Andrew about our tee time and received a smile and was assured it would not be necessary. Well, far from there being a crowd, there was not even a place to pay! It was an honour system where you put your money in a box on the 1st tee. Certainly the country town experience. We then said goodbye to Alex and Ange who were heading up the coast for a week...sad but only one of many goodbyes to come over the next week.
Monday night was spent catching up with old school mates. Adam, Daniel J and Daniel W were have known each other since the 7th grade and it was great that we were able to get together and go over old stories and catch up on what we have all been doing for the past few years. Daniel W drove to my house and picked Adam from the station, then we headed up to Johno's house at the Terrace. We met his wife Kim, who could not have been nicer...then after a beer, went to the fancy "Muree Golf Club" for many beers. 8 schooners each later and we were ready for dinner, more beer and a weird compulsion to go looking for some more alcohol. Canadian Club and Ginger Ale was found and an amazingly small amount actually drunk while watching an episode of the "Young Ones"...another part of our youth!
After a great breakfast Tuesday we headed back to Newcastle. Before we left, I had received a call that Alex and Ange were heading back our way to spend some more time with us! So that afternoon we went to the cinema and the girls were treated by cousin Alex to see Toy Story 3...Mindy, Angus and myself wandered around a shopping mall, drank coffee and relaxed as much as we could with a 6 month old in tow.
The rest of the week was spent seeing people and kind of saying goodbye. A couple of visits to see Aunty Betty including catching up with Kevin and Glenys were a priority. We went up to see Mick and Margaret on Wednesday night...another fun evening as expected! On Thursday Daniel and Alethia came up for dinner and we said goodbye to them. Friday brought the final farewell to Mick's family when everyone came over for pizza. It was difficult to say goodbye to everyone as expected but we had a wonderful time and hopefully will get back a little sooner than 4 years for our next visit.
Saturday was departure day. We managed to stuff everything into the car and then said farewell to Mum. This was very difficult for everyone...it is getting tougher now because the kids are old enough to understand what is going on as well. I like to avoid a drawn out goodbye so we got away nice and early for the airport. The journey was relatively smooth...arrived OK; rental car dropped off; checked in bags; got to immigration THEN had to fill out 5 departing passenger cards; claimed back the tax paid for the opals...then went to the gate with about 15 minutes to spare before we boarded!
As expected, the flight was a nightmare. Naomi is now too tall to get comfortable and so as a result, our trip was about 10 hours of her squirming around not sleeping...and us therefore not sleeping much either. Mindy had Angus on her lap, I had Fiona lying on my lap...and Naomi kind of bounced around between the two of us. It was at this time that I brought up the fact of us only having 90 minutes to make our flight to New York! I assumed it would be OK but still knew we would have to hustle to make it.
So...touch down in LA...first obstacle - get the gate checked stroller. Luckily it was waiting for us immediately off the plane. Then to immigration where we lined up...not too bad. Then the agents took a whole group from BEHIND us to another line where they moved more quickly. Through immigration, then to baggage claim. Fortunately the bags came out relatively quickly and so then on to customs. There were two lines and looking ahead, I picked the one that had fewer people in it. Well, I did not realise that the OTHER line was being serviced by TWO agents...so we were stuck while people were flying past us. Eventually got through...45 minutes gone. Now all that was left was to get the bags to the conveyer belt for our next flight...get out of this terminal and into another terminal two away...THEN back through a security checkpoint...THEN to race to our gate.
So, we find our terminal and hit the line for security. Only about 10 people in front of us, 35 minutes until the flight leaves...not a problem. However, the line seems to not be moving. 10 minutes later, we had 8 people in front of us. I realised we would miss our flight if not bumped up so requested to get this expedited from the agent. Fortunately he let us go next! So now just a simple matter of removing Angus from the sling; taking off 4 pairs of shoes; removing the liquids and my laptop from the bag; then pushing a camera bag; laptop bag; 4 carry on bags; a stroller and all of our shoes through the machine! Then get dressed on the other side and get to the gate. As time was now VERY close, I ran ahead with Naomi (and the stroller, laptop bag; camera bag and two carry on bags) and made it to the gate as we were being paged. Literally, we got on the plane, stowed our bags, sat down and they shut the door of the plane. 5 more minutes and we missed it. So - exhaused; tired and hungry...we tried to relax for our 6 hour flight across the country.
Everything else was uneventful. All our bags arrived OK. Rita and Cam picked us up and everything fit back into our van. Of course, we were smashed by the heat wave and time change but we made it in one piece, without missing any planes, so no real complaints.
We all had a fantastic time and have to get back to reality. Now I have 6 months with no vacation to look forward to. At least the cricket season is still going on - Staten Island game this weekend!

Australia - Week 3 - Part 2
The rest of the week was set up to spend some time with the family in Newcastle. Various members who are teachers were off for the holidays, Mick took a week off so we looked for stuff to do that was kid friendly and local.
First stop on Monday was at the Shortland Wetlands. The weather was gloomy with patchy rain (it stayed this way for the whole week) but we decided to chance it. As it turned out, it worked out quite well. Lunch at the cafe was very nice and we then followed with a few hours of walking the trails and looking at the wildlife. Monday night brought another visit from Evo, working in the area again. Once again - great to catch up, although perhaps the fame and fortune brought by getting mentioned in this blog were part of the attraction. It was a short visit, he had other dinner plans, but consuming a 6 pack was a great way to spend the evening.
Tuesday was another big highlight - a day trip to "Oakvale Farm". This is an interactive farm/zoo where you can get close to the animals, both native animals and other farm animals. We purchased a couple of bags of food for hand feeding and went on our way. Immediately through the gate, a couple of kangaroos hopped up and were duly rewarded with some from the girls. I think they would have happily blown through all of their right there! After this, we went to an interactive feeding exhibition. The girls were given bottles of milk to feed to the lambs and baby goats in their pens. After this, they were invited to try their hands at milking a cow. Naomi was first up and really got the hang of it, certainly made a lot of milk come out. Then it was Fiona's try. She also seemed to have the touch, getting some milk into the bucket...then something else happened - the cow lifted her tail and let out a massive pee. Fiona jumped for cover to avoid getting in the way and made it out of there uninjured! She then sat down to continue and had no sooner put her hands on the cow again when the cow let out a massive poo. So with a couple of tugs, Fiona was able to pretty much empty the cow of everything!
Koalas were next on the agenda, getting to pat them and see them very close. Highlight here was the baby still on its mother's back. Very cute. A short tractor ride around the farm followed, then we explored further. Lunch was next with rolls and sandwich meats to be consumed...except that someone (Mindy) forgot to pack the rolls! We were able to make do with some salads etc so the potential disaster was averted.
Spent a lot of time in the free range kangaroo area feeding the roos and getting crap all over our shoes and the wheels of the stroller. The girls really had a blast. There was an enclosure nearby with a few minature ponies. During the tractor ride we were told that on knew how to slip through the fence and they were happy to let her explore. The horse got out and was walked along, flanked by Naomi and Fiona for quite a while. Within a few seconds they had named her "Princess", no real surprise for anyone who knows them. After this, a trip to the hose to wash off all of the poo and then a visit to the gift store before heading home. A really great day was had by all.
The next couple of days were a little more quiet, involving a trip up to Mick's to watch the State of Origin game. The match was close and competitive, sadly the class of the Queensland stars came through in the end and they got home with a few minutes to spare. Enjoyable game...even more enjoyable beer and company.
To wrap up the week, we headed to the Australia Reptile Park (like we had not seen enough wildlife yet). Mick and Margaret met us there for another day of exploring and seeing (mainly) Australian animals. Patting of wombats; many different reptiles and also a photo opportunity with two baby dingoes was taken. The girls really enjoyed this. We also saw some Tassie Devils and a couple of Galapagos tortoises. There were a couple of nice reptile shows on offer, the bloke who was doing the demo was quite funny and made several jokes at the expense of audience members. I was talking to him later and he mentioned that he wished he knew Mindy was American during the show "I have lots of American jokes I could have used to embarrass her". So, I had to think I missed a big opportunity there. After lunch we went to see the crocodile feeding, the spider exhibit and the indoor snake exhibit - all quite good. Then we packed up and headed home after quite a busy day and week!

Australia - Week 3 - Part 1
More driving on Friday - down to Daniel and Alethia's on the Central Coast for a couple of days. Friday was spent at their house, hanging out and letting the kids play near the lake. Dinner was a fantastic lamb roast and was accompanied by many beers, several of the home-brew variety.
Saturday was spent exploring Sommersby Falls, a nice waterfall in a national park area. The walk down to the falls began with some steps and then progressively got more tricky and rough as we headed down. The falls are quite beautiful with several observation points over the route. Mindy did a great job in getting down as far as she did with Angus in the sling but had to stop and wait for us one spot before the very bottom. The girls were doing a great job, in fact, the issue was more with them running everywhere rather than them being intimidated at all. Many photos and some video were shot and we then began the ascent. A really nice day and certainly one of the highlights of the trip for us. After this, we headed around the The Entrance where they have daily pelican feeding. This was also a lot of fun and the girls really enjoyed it. Then back home for some Thai food before heading back to Newcastle. Many thanks to Daniel and Alethia for their hospitality and the suggestions for how to spend the day!

Australia - Week 2 - Part 2
Tuesday morning and we were off to Sydney. Used some more Marriott points...I will need to start travelling with work again soon or I might have to start paying for this stuff! As with our last visit, the Sydney Harbour Marriott hotel was the clear choice.
We arrived in the early afternoon and spent a few hours walking around Circular Quay and near the Opera House. We then took a "trackless train" ride through the Botanic Gardens and saw enough to give us a plan for Wednesday. After this, a few souvenir shops were hit and we went back to the room and prepared with "friend dinner number 1", Willow...an old high school buddy.
As we did 4 years ago, we decided upon the Lowenbrau brewery and ordered large schnitzels and even larger beers. Mindy and the kids came along for the meal to ease some of her cabin fever. After dinner, back to the hotel to drop off the family then out for a few more drinks. "The Rugby Club" was our first stop; then the "Belgian Beer Cafe" where we sampled a couple of bottles of a beer called "Satan" I believe. Finally wrapped up at "Jackson's on George" before calling it a night. A great night was had, catching up, remembering the past and talking the night away. Rough plans were made for another night in Newcastle in a couple of weeks.
Wednesday, as planned, was spent exploring the Botanic Gardens. The kids really enjoyed running around there and the many sights on offer. The fruit bats were pretty cool, Mindy and I traded off the video camera and did not realize that the other had been filming basically the same thing...so we have a lot of bat footage! We also found some cockatoos that would land on you. Weirdly, we have no footage of the girls and me getting swamped...I had 4 on me, and the girls two each. A couple of pictures were taken but these did not really do it justice.
After this, we continued around the harbour to Macquarie Point with a great view back to the city. Then it was time to head back to the hotel when we realized how far we had walked! Maybe burned off half of the schnitzel from the previous night. Dinner on Wednesday was with Dave, my old room mate from Virginia. Mindy had planned to go along but Fiona was not feeling the best so she took the night off. Dinner was at "The Australian Hotel", a nice pub in The Rocks. Pizza and beer were consumed and once again, much catching up was done. We vowed to try to actually get our families together at some point in the future...
Thursday was spent doing some shopping. Opal necklaces were bought for the girls. An opal necklace AND opal ear rings were bought for Mindy. Angus and I watched this with much confusion. We then went to a bookstore and happily managed to find "Fiona the Flute Fairy" to go along with an earlier acquisition of "Naomi the Netball Fairy". Mindy found an Aboriginal art book that she seemed very happy with. After this, we headed back, jumped in the car and headed back to Newcastle. Quite a short visit but a lot of fun in perfect weather.

Australia - Week 2 - Part 1
Due to basically having no internet service for much of the trip...and certainly having no time for writing up blog entries when I did, this is now a few weeks old news but in any case...
Saturday brought a trip down to see the mighty Eels against the filthy Broncos. A bus was acquired for the day - Andrew drove us down, participants were the 5 of us, Andrew, Linda, Mick, Margaret and Alex. Went to the Leagues Club for lunch followed by a visit to the Eels store where much stuff was purchased - new sweat shirts for Mindy and me; t-shirt for Naomi; ball for Fiona (but later this became a shared ball) and a scarf for me. Inflatable hands where bought for the girls (thanks Uncle Mick) and so we did our part for giving the team a few $$$.
Before the game, we decided to go for a walk around the stadium. We then were hanging around outside our gate when some of the players started to walk by. A marker was acquired and Angus in his mini-jersey was thrust in front of several players for signing purposes. First Nathan Hindmarsh and Luke Burt, followed a few minutes later by Fui Fui; Daniel Mortimer and Jarryd Hayne! Not a bad little collection in the end. Was on the lookout for Nathan Cayless but I guess he came earlier or used a different entrance.
As for the game...well, the night was a lot of fun but from a league perspective, quite disappointing again. The Eels played poorly and came up short in the end. We were then treated to 2 hours of Angus screaming in the bus on the way home...after the result, I felt much the same way.
Sunday was a lazy day spent with Mick but went along to his local club for some free APL poker. I did OK, and made the final table but in the end, never got the hands when I needed them. However, in good news for the family, Alex went on the win the whole thing so in the end a decent Quirk showing.
Monday was spend at the house getting ready for our Sydney trip on Tuesday...
Saturday brought a trip down to see the mighty Eels against the filthy Broncos. A bus was acquired for the day - Andrew drove us down, participants were the 5 of us, Andrew, Linda, Mick, Margaret and Alex. Australia - Week 1
First achievement was actually making it here in one piece with 3 kids! Actually they all did fantastically on the flight, all the flights were on time and so we really could not have asked for much more. iPods loaded with movies was a good way to keep the older two in check...breast feeding seemed to work for Angus! Also, the first drive on the other side of the road was quite uneventful whihc is nice, especially when doing it after about 3 hours sleep on the flight!
Upon arrival it took us a few days to adjust to the time zones. The kids were waking up at 4:00am for the first few nights but are now on Aussie time. So far...some relative visiting and spending time with my mother have been the main activities. I did go to see the Eels play the Knights in the rain on Monday night - a fun night but losing in the last two minutes was not a part of the plan.
Have tried to consume as many pies as humanly possible. Consuming beer and Solo whenever possible. Other junk foods and assorted crap being thrown down at a rate of knots. Will seriously need a purge when I get back to the USA but that is something to worry about later.
Managed to catch up with a couple of (close to) Newcastle based friends. Evo - an old cricket mate from Richmond - works in Newcastle on occasion so we caught up for lunch. Maybe can arrange another meeting involving beer in a few weeks. Daniel and Alethia also came up during the week - always good to catch up.
Last night we went to my brother's house for a BBQ and some beer. Fat Yak was recommended to me before the trip and it has not disappointed. Of course, several other brews were sampled as well last night. A lot of "James" beer (Bogues and Squire). Today we are off in a bus to see the Eels play the Broncos in Parramatta. Kids will be kitted out in blue and gold...just hope the rain stays away...and we don't blow this one!
Next week...still unknown - maybe a couple of days in Sydney to catch up with some people but nothing planned as yet. Much beer and many pies in my future...that is for sure!

Australia!
We are close to being ready for our trip on Friday. I think I remember Mindy saying something about packing some clothes and things for the kids...so I am assuming that is done. My main focus is getting content downloaded to our new Apple devices. In addition to Mindy's iPad and Naomi's iPod Touch, we decided that with the looming trip, it would be quite tough for Fiona to sit there and watch Naomi play on her iPod for 24 hours. Alternatively, it would be quite tough for Mindy to sit there and watch Fiona play on her iPad for 24 hours! So we brought forward her birthday present and got her one the other day. However, that is not all... Mindy has been hitting the gym and the MP3 player she had been using had some issues with it, so we decided to get her an iPod Nano. And, not wanting to feel left out, I was eying the 160GB capacity of the classic, so with a shrug and a "what the hell", decided to get one of these for myself. Since then, the computer has been running 24x7 ripping CDs for everyone to load. Also, this week, we have been ripping some DVDs for the girls to watch while on the trip.
Looking forward to the holiday there. Not sure what we will be doing. The only thing that is somewhat planned is a trip to watch the Eels play on the 26th. Certainly a trip to Sydney will be happening at some point and I think Mindy has been sorting out some other options as well. Prime focus of the trip is visiting family, friends, drinking beer and eating pies. Pretty sure all of this will not be an issue.

Harley-Davidson
Spent the last couple of days at Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee and will be back there next week. Quite an interesting place. Jeans are the dress code and Harley shirts are everywhere. Cool cubicle decorations...instead of the toothpaste, soap etc from Colgate, the place is adorned with helmets and fuel tanks. Nice section of the parking lot devoted to Harleys of course. Apparently the employees get a 20% discount on buying a Harley...every year! Not a bad benefit, although my wimpy self you take advantage of this benefit exactly zero times.
Was supposed to be home today but weather meant my flight was cancelled. So had to hop a BUS to Chicago and have a mid-morning flight out tomorrow :-( .

Pearl Jam - MSG
On Thursday night I saw Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden. A fantastic show and a great set list, probably only topped by MSG the next night (a show I sadly could not get tickets for)...anyway... From the opening number they were on fire, hitting song after song on their way to a 2.5 hour set. Highlights...Elderly Woman, last Exit, Jeremy and Do The Evolution.
Many drinks were had pre-show with Tim. Luckily made it home after falling asleep on the train and waking up one station before I had to get off. Friday was a struggle, not getting much sympathy (deservedly so) from Mindy and the kids.

Kasper
The festival guest at Philly was Michael Kasprowicz. Personally (and not just because he is an Aussie) I think he was one of the best guests we have had. Getting to play against him was great. But it all comes down to how well he can speak. Derek Underwood was a great guy and nice to chat to in the bar...but his speech was deathly dull. Kasper walked the line perfectly providing insight, comedy and anecdotes in the right proportion.
Andrew Symonds is apparently quite the character. Kasper told a couple of stories about comments he would make from time to time. Apparently Andy Bichel had a couple of letters written on his bat: "FT". The 3 of them were there one day and Symonds saw this and asked what it stood for. Bichel replied: "Focus and Technique...it is just something that helps me think about the important things when I am batting". Symonds then replied: "I think I would have 'SW" ". "What would that stand for?"..."Swing Hard" was the reply.
He also spoke of the 2005 Ashes and the mood in the dressing room. He said it was the first time that "luck" was being mentioned in an Australian dressing room. There was also a subtle change in tactics when we beat India over there for the first time in forever. Instead of setting typical Aussie fields with 3 slips and a gully, bowling at off stump, they played to India's strengths. Block off mid wicket and mid on and bowl at the stumps and force them to change. The results would indicate this was quite effective.
After the speech, got a cricket ball signed and staggered home...many bottles of Mad Dog wine was consumed and a lot of laughs were had. We also lined up Kasper and his wife for a dinner in NY when they were visiting the next week...
So Thursday night, a week later, and I went into NYC to meet Kasper and his wife Lindsey for drinks and dinner. What a great evening! Drinks were had at a small pub in the Greenwich Village and then we had a private room for our dinner. About 6 Mad Dogs, a few partners and the Kaspers. I managed to get a prime spot next to him and a great night of questions about cricket and everything else was had. For me the highlight was talking to him about captaincy. Steve Waugh was named as the best captain he played under and it was clear that there was a little resentment about Mark Taylor's "18 month form slump". Not that anything bad was said, but it was clear that it was not just the fans who were getting pissed off by his constant selection, despite him not being able to score a run.
It ended up being a very late night to get home but certainly well worth the lack of sleep. Not sure who will be next up for Philly but can't wait for 2011!

Philly 2010
The last few weeks have been really busy around here, partly due to work issues, and partly self inflicted. I have finally finished up at Colgate. After 3 years, literally, they ran our of money! Perhaps there will be an opportunity to return in the future, we will see. This did mean that for the past few weeks, it was a mad scramble to wrap everything up and to transfer all of my responsibilities to Colgate people.
Now to the fun, self-inflicted stuff...
Last week was the Philly Cricket Festival. We had a decent side going down there, full of drinkers and a few people with some cricket ability so we had all areas covered there. There were always going to be 3 games that were the tough ones in our group...Littleton; "Dream Cricket" and Toronto. Our first game was against Littleton so we had to be quick out of the gates. Additionally, I was the captain of the squad for the festival so there was a lot of additional stuff to think of.
The format of the festival was T20 this year, so we had to make sure that the runs were coming quickly and we remained focused on setting a decent score. We actually batted really well in this game. Lots of people chipped in with some quick knocks and we finished our innings 9 down for 151. I came in in the later overs and scored 14 from about 10 balls and was quite happy with how things were going. Things started well for us in the field, getting a wicket of the first ball! A great catch a few overs later saw us well on top and it was only a matter of time before the game would be wrapped up (or so it seemed). Then they began smashing us to all parts of the ground, not only keeping up with the run rate...but actually were ahead of it. It came down to the last two overs, with them having one good batsman left. The needed 10 runs from 12 balls and Boyke delivered a great over, only conceeding two runs! Even better, their good batsman was down the non-striker's end. First ball was a dot that popped off a length and caught our keeper under the chin making him lose the ball...so they ran a bye!! So not only, not a dot ball...but their hitter now was on strike. However, Coatsey knocked him over next ball and we all knew that would wrap it up for us. In the end, they got to 148...so a great start.
Game two was against "Dream Cricket", a group of 16-21 year olds with a couple of old heads to run things. We again batted first, I did nothing in this one but we got to what was another decent total - 131. At one point in the chase it looked like they were going to make it interesting but we held them under the rate for long enough to wrap things up and in the end, won by about 15 runs.
The afternoon game on Friday was against Philadelphia, a weak side but they had added the festival guest Michael Kasprowicz to their team for this game. The Aussies in our side all wanted a crack at him and so we were all thrown into the top 4 for this game. He was not bowling quickly but was accurate and swinging the ball around. I got a single, squirting one through square leg but as kept on the crease by his lenght and movement and he bowled a cutter that beat the bat and took out my off stump. Great experience to face him however, a really nice bloke too. The game did not go so well. We found a way to play down to the oppo and also, were giving all in our squad a chance to get a game so there were some of the better players who were sitting out. In the end, too many runs conceeded with 3 bad overs cost us the game.
Toronto was next up and we knew this was the biggest game for us to play. They had several former first class players in their ranks and 4 people who are current members of the Canadian national side. They had us very overmatched but one interesting thing happened during their innings. There were strict festival rules regarding getting through the game as they were playing 3 matches per day. Mid way through their innings a wicket fell and nobody was ready to come in. Also, nobody was even too worried about padding up. The umpires had already given us a hurry up for our overs and were then telling us that they have 90 seconds to get to the middle (festival rule) or he could be out if we appealed. Then one thing happened that really pissed me off. They stepped inside the boundary rope and arrogantly stated, we are on the field of play, so we are OK with the time. A quick poll of the team and we agreed that we should put him on his way, so I waited until the next player had begin his walk to the middle (one of their 1st Class players) and appealed. Never been a part of a timed out before... When I batted (and got a duck) I received all manner of abuse from their team (as was expected). Later that night their team walked into the bar quite late and I told them they only had 90 seconds to get a drink. I think they saw the funny side by then...also, since they won the game, it was a non-issue.
The rest of the festival was then focused on getting everyone a game and drinking. We certainly did our best at this!

An Apple (or two) a Day
I finally caved in to years of pressure and bought an Apple device. I had never owned anything made by them before and had resisted in part because I did not understand the hype and cult following that their products had. However, we were in need of a new computer. Our desktop is quite old and while it still does the job, it is certainly getting to the end of its life. I have my work laptop that I can use and occasionally Mindy will use this as well but with Angus, it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to go to the basement and use the PC.
I was thinking of getting a laptop, this would give Mindy the ability to keep it upstairs and have easier access. I would probably keep the desktop as well, I had not thought that far ahead. Then I saw a blog entry and began reading about the iPad and I knew this was the thing for Mindy. Small, light, instantly turned on, great touch screen interface and PERFECT for web surfing and email, which is pretty much all Mindy (and most of us) does on a computer in any case.
Mindy was not 100% sure about it but we went to the Apple store to take a look. The product is amazing! Sure, there are some possible improvements that could be made but for what Mindy and most casual computer users need, it is perfect. Apple has successfully changed the model from "inventing stuff to do on computers" to "inventing computers to do stuff". While there, we were looking at their other products as well and I was thinking that it would not be my last visit there. Purchase made and off to the girls' school to pick them up.
On the way there we were discussing Naomi's birthday and how she has been begging for an iPod for a while now. So we thought we would give her the choice - she could have a party or we would put that money to the iPod. When we asked her, it took her all of two seconds to request the iPod. We decided to stop back at the Apple store on the way home and mess with her a little bit. We told her she could pick out a case and "pretend" for a few weeks until her birthday while secretly purchasing the iPod as well. The fact that she was excited to do this was really sweet. When we got to the car, we gave her the bag and asked her to check it to make sure we got the right one. She was quite excited (to say the least) when she saw what else was in there.
So since then, Mindy and Naomi have been walking around the house getting their money's worth from their devices. Nothing about the iPad in particular has made me regret the purchase and I think that the market for similar devices will likely explode as people realize what they can do.

Summer Time
So it seems Spring has passed us by, this week has been stinking hot. Fortunately it is set to cool back down a little over the weekend but hopefully there is no rain interfering with cricket! :-)
After getting back from Virginia we had our first outdoor cricket practice. It was nice to see everyone again and to get right back into the important tasks of putting shit on team mates and goofing off. Batted OK, bowled well at first then lost concentration a little.
Have been back playing cash games online on Bodog and have done well this week. Thanks to several knuckleheads last night had one of my best nights ever. Enjoying playing 6 handed NL cash games. The time passes quickly and you can avoid many of the delays involved in a full ring game. However, folding a lot leads to not having to really concentrate full time on the game either.
Am also getting inspired to buy an ipad for Mindy. I think that this will be perfect for her to access the internet and email quickly and I know Naomi and Fiona will love it as well. In fact, I don't expect to see them again once this device hits the house! I read a review that described the ipad as "i-crack" for young kids and knowing their fascination with such things, this will be proven correct. One of their current games is to use our mobile phones to type on the "notepad"...so when they get the chance to use an app on the touch screen, they will go crazy.
Angus is rolling over now and getting huge. Mindy put him in a 9 month outfit that was a perfect fit for him (at 3 1/2 months). We think he might be in the early stages of teething. He is drooling all over the place and seems to be more miserable of late. Of course, he could just drool a lot and enjoys whining. He is a perfectly content baby as long as you are holding him AND walking around, which is nice...except he weighs a ton! We need to put more photos on Facebook and hope to do so this weekend.
We have another busy weekend coming up. Naomi's pet club where she brings in her pet hamster to show everyone. Fiona's first spring time soccer game. The Rainbow Butterflies are back! Pitch work and cricket practice...and this is just Saturday!
Watched an amazing show the other night - "Breakout" - a one hour series that details through interviews and reenactments a different prison break each week. Amazingly tense and you weirdly find yourself hoping for them to escape, which makes no sense as these are normally hardened criminals and you KNOW they get out in any case. Certainly comes highly recommended. Also, have re-watched a couple of Steve Martin classics lately, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and LA Story, the latter is one of my personal faves! Both held up well after a long time since the last viewing.
Spring Break
This week is a week off school for the kids. We are down in Virginia visiting Mindy's family. Today is her grandmother's 75th birthday party so literally ALL of her rels will be there - it should be a very interesting afternoon, great people watching opportunity for sure. Yesterday was spent hanging out with her mother, sister, brother and cousin and eating Mexican food. Good stuff!
I am also lamenting Parra's slow start ot the season. Sure, they lost to good teams but it would be nice for them to win a few games to kick of the season once in a while.

Got Some
Got some Pearl Jam tickets. Fan club seating for the May 20 show. What a drama! First onsale went up on Tuesday at 3:00pm. I logged into the website 15 minutes early and was ready to go, figuring that I would click "refresh" every 5 minutes while on the page showing the shows for sale, hoping to grab the NYC tickets as soon as they became available. Another pertinant piece of information is that there was a notice on the website that if you have tickets in your basket, you have 10 minutes to check out otherwise the tickets would be reallocated to someone else.
Of course, it was not as easy as that. At 2:55, the website basically was just hanging as all of the other local fans were doing the same thing. However, slowly progress was made. For every step of the way - get to the ticket screen; select the tickets; confirm the purchase; check out - the system crashed but after a few refreshes I was able to get to the screen entering the credit card details. I entered everything and figured I was done...and then it crashed again. Went back and refreshed and tried again (figured if I was charged twice, I would deal with it later) . This time, I got the following messages - "Your order has been placed"...AND..."Your cart is empty"...AND..."You cannot check out with an empty cart". So, then I was MORE confused! Did they take the tickets from my cart prior to the order going through? So I check my email...and there was the confirmation email with an order number! Everything checked out OK...so May 20 tickets were in the bag!
Next stop, May 21 tickets...
They went on sale at 6:00pm, later the same day. Same plan but this time the system was even worse. Managed to get the tickets in my shopping cart but was unable to get past this point (kept timing out). Very frustrating!
However, I found out there is a final, additional fan club presale today at 2:00pm. I am assuming the seats will likely be a little worse but still better than the general onsale tickets. I am planning another assault in a couple of hours.

Boys Of Summer
Starting to feel like we are shaking off the winter season. The weather is getting a little warmer and I had my first 2010 cricket hit out on Saturday. I had to drive into Brooklyn to a facility with indoor nets and as a result of the snow clearing activities, it took me 2 1/2 hours to make the 30 mile drive. It was all worth it upon arriving though. I bowled for about 45 minutes and did OK, will see if this can continue this year. I have resolved that if my bowling does not come back this year, to pull a Cameron White and shelve it. I was very happy with the batting, nice to get a few in the middle after 6 months.
Woke up planning to watch the 2nd T20 game and found that the channel guide was incorrect so the game did not record. Of course, this led to a call to Directv to ask them what they could do to compensate me for this inconvenience. 3 months of Showtime and Cinemax free was the result, not too shabby! Set a heap of movies to record and began watching them. Saw "Letters From Iwo Jima" - what an amazing film. At first I hated the overdubbed voices but that aspect actually grew on me as the movie progressed. Certainly highly recommended and a great showcase for Clint Eastwood's directing ability.
Also finished reading "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. It speaks of reasons that lead to the success of obviously successful people and shows how this success is the end of a sequence of events making them special. Also, highly recommended.
Rugby was entertaining to watch - Brumbies stole a win at the death and the Waratahs certainly improved from last week, so I am hopeful that the Wallabies will be have a decent squad this year. Deans needs to produce the goods now.
I am hearing nothing but good reports from friends about the Aussie AC/DC shows. They are coming back to the USA for some make-up shows in a couple of months, I am hoping they expand this schedule a little bit to get somewhere near NJ.
The eating better plan is working well although is taking a bit of a detour right now thanks to the arrival of the girls' Girl Scout Cookies. I think I am OK, if I average the calorie and saturated fat content over the year, it is really nothing much to be concerned about.

Rearviewmirror
One of the best Pearl Jam songs sums up my feelings right now...glad to have the last couple of weeks in my Rearviewmirror (not sure that Eddie Veddor was talking about working too much but whatever). Put in an insane number of hours both at Colgate and on a 2nd project in the evenings but now (hopefully) the worst is behind me. This week should be back to being relatively normal.
By Friday night I was completely exhausted but really felt like some relaxation time was necessary so went out and played poker with some friends. My head was only 1/2 in the game and lost some money as a result, but nothing too crazy. Didn't play very well, got no hands worth speaking of but did figure out a couple of trends in the play of the others at the table. Hopefully I get a chance to exploit these at a future session where I am not so tired.
Watched some ODI and T20 cricket over the weekend as well. We are certainly playing well in these games but the oppo is really helping us out as well. We should be able to piece together a good side for the upcoming World Cups, will be interested in seeing how the selectors piece everything together. Quite sad in a way watching just how far the West Indies have fallen. Not only are they not great cricketers but they don't seem to be trying particularly hard as well. A real shame for a once great Test country.
Last night managed to get a great night's sleep however so I feel quite good this morning. Mindy informed me that Angus had a terrible night last night...I guess I blasted straight through it all. When I am tired like that I am pretty much like a bear hibernating - either that, or I sleep walk.
On other matters, we have both resolved to get on an "eating better" kick. We will see how well that goes.

Cell Phones
Mindy lost her cell phone right after Angus was born. At first we figured it must have fallen out, maybe at the hospital but then we remembered that we had heard an alarm on her phone in the other room when we were at home. So...we know that the phone is either in the house or perhaps has been gathered up with something and thrown out, which was quite frustrating. We gave it a few weeks for it to turn up but had no luck.
My cell phone was completely dead as well. I literally had 5 minutes of battery life. I also hated a lot of the features as well. I think I was the last person to actually buy a Razr model phone with good reason - they are JUNK. So off we went to the Sprint store to see what they could do for us.
Basically...they hooked us up! We both got the same phone model, a Samsung "Reclaim", made from 80% corn in some way and made with other environmentally conscious factors as well. So far so good. We are now both expecting Mindy's old phone to turn up but we are more than happy with the switch. The girls wanted something too: "It is not fair that you guys get something on Valentine's Day and we don't". When we started to remind them of the stuff they received for Christmas, I think they figured out that they had done OK.
Angus is now almost better. His cough is almost gone and so that is a huge relief. Found out that my contract here at Colgate is likely to run out at the end of April, so still 10 weeks but after that, it is looking quite unlikely for another extension. After almost 3 years of being local, I really cannot complain about it ending...but it will still suck to have to travel (possibly) again.

Snow Days!
Wednesday was a work from home snow day. We had about a foot of snow fall, which is a quite decent amount, but nothing like the mid-Atlantic states. DC got hammered again, they must literally be buried by now. I was actually quite busy catching up on everything that I needed to do but still found time to get some sledding in with the girls later in the afternoon. I also did the bulk of the digging out as I knew leaving it all until Thursday would not work.
Last night was a rough one for Angus. He has been fighting off a cough and at 4:00, woke up coughing and throwing up as a result of the cough. Pretty much did this for about 45 minutes and so with this, coupled with the girls' school being closed again, worked form home again today. Fortunately Angus seemed a lot better by lunchtime. he is pretty much either OK or coughing...just hoping the periods of OK continue to lengthen.

Wings and Pizza
I think this weekend I pretty much ate my weight in hot sauce. It all started on Friday with a trip to see the NJ Devils play the Toronto Maple Leafs in a hockey game. Scored a free ticket so decided it was too good to pass up! Met my friend before the game for wings and pizza (and a few beers) before heading to the game. Things were looking good early, leading 1-0 after the first period however 3 Toronto goals in the second took the atmosphere away. It appeared the Devils were looking at a depressing loss, 3 minutes to go in the game and still down 3-1...then they scored to at least make it a little interesting. A minute later, they go on the power play and score again with about a minute left in the game. THEN, they score the winning goal with about 20 seconds left!!! So 3 goals in 3 minutes to win 4-3. To add to the excitement, all 7 goals were scored right in front of us, so we were certainly sitting at the right end of the ice.
After getting home, I then watched the T20 game, Australia v Pakistan...another game we had no rights winning but a great bowling effort and the usual assistance by Pakistan got us home there as well.
Saturday brought the snow and some friends came over for lunch and sledding on our hill in the back yard. Lunch was, once again, wings and pizza. The sledding was a lot of fun with no injuries of any kind. A successful afternoon.
Sunday was of course Super Bowl Sunday. Went over to Gary's house for, yes, wings AND and amazing Buffalo Chicken Dip. I think I am done with hot sauce for a while now...in fact, I should be done with eating for a while. We had to leave soon after the game started to get the kids to bed but it was a great game to watch. I really didn't like/dislike either of the teams too much but I was hoping for an upset result and the Saints did not disappoint. After a shaky start, they closed things down and with a few VERY gutsy calls from the coach were able to run away with it in the end. Down 10-0 early, they ended up winning 31-17, it really was a great performance. I was also totally sick of hearing the announcers referring to Peyton Manning as simply "Peyton" for the whole game. Every other player gets called by their last name, why is he so friggin special?

Birthday Stuff
Of course, last Saturday was Mindy's birthday. It is always fun to see what lies the girls can come up with when we are planning birthday surprises. Fiona decided that it was plausible for us to have to take an emergency trip to her school to get a paper puppet she left there. Mindy (of course) played along while we REALLY went out to buy birthday cake supplies, a Pink CD/DVD as a gift, and donuts/coffee for breakfast.
After this, Indian food for lunch then a quiet evening at the house. Our local Indian buffet is back! There was a recent change in ownership but now it seems that they have the menu sorted out again.
Angus also had another checkup and he is developing into quite a large lad! 97th percentile for height (length) and weight, grew 3lbs in two weeks and is the size of a "normal" 3 month old. Not bad for 5 weeks! There are some future "All Black" kids right now, crying themselves to sleep worrying about getting hit by this future "Wallaby" :-)
Life is still amazingly busy. Managing on not a lot of sleep...but looking forward to seeing the NJ Devils play tomorrow night. A friend got some free tickets, a price too good to pass on.

Awful Morning, Great Afternoon
Right before I was about the leave with the girls to school/work, it started snowing. A quick check of the weather and the school cancellation message and we got confirmation that school was in fact on. The snow appeared to only be relatively light, ending around lunch time, so off we went.
As it turned out, the snow was pretty much exactly the worst kind of snow to be driving in. Light enough to mean that everyone was out on the roads but still heavy enough to cause cars to be sliding everywhere. There were accidents all over the place and the commute, normally 40 minutes, was still in progress at the 2 hour mark.
At this point I was approaching the exit from our last main road, and noticed that a lot of cars were getting onto the shoulder of the road to get up to the exit ramp (the main lanes were pretty much stopped at this point). I decided to also try this and it was going well, making some more progress when suddenly someone decided to try to cut in front of me. Of course, there was a lot more snow on the shoulder and there was no way I was going to be able to stop in time...so I had to hope that I could slow down a little and that they would accelerate away. Naturally, their cunning plan in the icy conditions was to cut in front of me, then stop...so at about 15 mph (I guess) I ran up the back of the car.
Massive shout out here for the Honda manufacturing process, particularly the Japanese bloke who designed their bumpers...the only damage to my car was to the licence plate cover - literally. The woman in front had a few small scratches on her bumper. As part of my continuing need to educate humanity, I threw out a comment - "Are you serious cutting in front like that in this weather?", she then yelled back something about me driving on the shoulder...the same shoulder that she was driving on when she cut in front of me. I could have continued by showing her the lack of logic in her comment but thought better of it.
I said that I was happy to simply drive on if she was happy to do it. If we wanted to wait for the police, we would literally have been there for hours so everything worked out OK.
I managed to crawl up to the exit ramp, then saw there were 3 cars smashed up there so despite only being a few miles from our destination, figured that there was no guarantee it would have been a short trip. I then took another exit and looped back around and headed home, arriving back 3 hours after leaving. The girls were happy to get a snow day and I got some stuff done in the afternoon, so it all ended up being OK. Working from home in comfortable clothes near a fire beats going into the office any day!

Catching Up
I think we are now pretty much over the initial hump of live with 3 kids. It was made worse over the past 3 weeks as I was working extra hours in the evenings, however, this should be behind me for a little while at least.
Angus is growing well. His next appointment is in early February but he seems to have added a couple of pounds and is already not fitting some of the 0-3 months clothes we had for him.
Naomi had a couple of minor cavities fixed the other day. So minor as to not need a needle and she did not feel a thing so that was good. When she heard she had to get something done, she was quite anxious, we were glad when it went so smoothly.
Cricket news - great wins by the Aussies in the ODIs. Despite Cameron White once being picked in the Test side as a bowler, I am lamenting the fact that his bowling is not quite enough to slot in there somewhere. However, I think I would be giving strong consideration to picking him as a #6 in the Test side. Would he really score much less than North? Also, with Haddin, Johnson and Hauritz at 7,8,9...we do have good depth and could afford to carry someone a bit I think. His slip fielding would be a massive boost for us, he is a decent bowling option as a 2nd spinner and I think, given time, his batting could continue to develop. Watching Watson has given me this hope - he has gone from an all rounder to being considered a front line batsman. Andrew Symonds and Steve Waugh were others who made this step up. Perhaps White could do the same. In any case, in the ODI team he is now a fixture and making us not miss Symonds quite so much.

Mouse In The Bed
Last night, around 2:00am I awoke to find a living mouse actually inside our bed. Fortunately, with my lightning fast reflexes, I managed to grab the critter in one hand...all without needing the assistance of any sort of light in the room. Of course, at this point, I decided to ask for help from Mindy in organizing proper disposal of the rodent however, much to my surprise, not only was she not in the slightes way interested in helping...she was not even bothered by my discovery!
I detected a slight sarcastic tone to her voice when she said "There's a mouse in the bed?"... I looked at my empty clenched fist then realized that this was another "sleep walking" episode. It is really the weirdest thing - for me it is all quite real - for Mindy it is all quite ridiculous! Still - not quite as strange as the last time when I was convinced I was some sort of "secret agent" dude and I was feigning sleep, waiting for her to try to escape. Luckily for her she knew better and stayed in the bed! All 100% true...and these examples are not even the weirdest ones from my past. A quite strange "affliction".
A brief Angus update - he is doing well and growing nicely. He is now over 10lbs. Can't wait for him to learn to stand so we can start practicing "lineouts".

Angus etc
Things are starting to get back to normal, whatever that means. Angus has spent the past two weeks eating, sleeping and pooping which is a fine way to spend your life. At his two week check up he has continued to gain weight so all is well. Also, he continues to be relatively content. Not too much crying - he will wake to feed then go back to sleep. Mindy is also feeling better - still not 100% but on the improve.
From my perspective, I am doing more stuff in the evenings. Running around after the girls, running a few more errands, working and watching cricket. In fact, cricket is the main reason form me needing much coffee during the day. Last night, I stayed up until 2:00 watching us beat the Pakis. It should never have been this close and unfortunately I think Ponting sees this as vindicating his decision to bat rather then him realising that we won in spite of his decision to bat. A lot of fun to see it happen though.
Post Christmas fun has been spent on the Wii. The girls really love it and it is letting me see their competitive nature REALLY come out. Table tennis is the best for this...for whatever reason, this game makes them want to get in each other's faces when they win a point and there is certainly some pissing and moaning from the loser each time. Mario Kart is quite a challenge for them but they love the Littlest Pet Shop game. The Dance Revolution was also a hit. Mindy and I have done battle in several games, table tennis probably one of the faves right now.
Movies etc...watched the Kill Bill series again - a lot of fun. Nothing recent however. I would like to get out and see Avatar but not sure that will happen.
Work is quite busy catching up on everything. Hopefully I can stay at Colgate for a while yet, looking promising but nothing has been signed at this stage.
